Merson is a fan, and I suppose he has a point, they are pretty similar if you remove the 26 major trophies, including two Champions League titles and three Premier Leagues, Serie A, La Liga and 4 manager of the years awards.

I'm a big fan of Jose Mourinho. He’s been an amazing manager over the years, one of the all-time greats but I don't see how this Everton job ticks the box.

Everton are in a massive, massive relegation fight. I think it's out of them and Ipswich to go down. Mourinho needs to be higher up the league than hanging around fifth bottom.

I just don't see how Mourinho does as any differently to Sean Dyche. I don't see any difference in that. He's a massive name in football but I'd be careful with that one.

Dyche to Mourinho, got to be a significant upgrade surely?

He loves pretending to be the hard done lowly underdog, he could come to EFC and be a real one.

Don't think it would be disastrous, we wouldn't go down. It would just tiresome and delay us from being run like a proper club for another 2 years (if we're lucky). The idea of Mourinho is much better than the reality and I doubt we'd get the 'benefit' of him leaving having won us a trophy considering how far away we are.

I'm sure there'd be some fun moments but the game is past him. There's a reason he's in Fenerbahce.

Why does Mourinho excite you, but Potter filled you with dread?

One is Jose and the other is a failed Chelsea manager

I don't want Mourinho but fuck me I would imagine he'd motivate this lot and get us up the league in relatively easy fashion.

We'd probably be decent enough next season too, it's just what comes after that which we all know would be a problem.

Toxic personality, doesn't build for the future, would probably demand loads of signings that hamstrung us for years... It's not the appointment we should be making. So in that case you just know that we will.

That's partly serious, I am easily seduced by a big name, but I just don't think Potter is able to adapt and would've failed with this squad. I think Jose would be able to take what we have and improve. It's not long-term and it's probably not a sustainable option, but it would be interesting in the short term

So push our real problems down the road for eighteen months or so.

Yes, I'm not arguing with that thought process, but you make it sound like I have any influence over this.
This is what I expected from TFG, so I've been prepared for this type of appointment

I don't think we'd even get a short spell of ''fun'' with Mourinho.

He's never had a squad even close to as bad as this one. And we don't have the funds to strengthen it immediately.

Think it would be a complete disaster from day one.

Its relative though, look at the success he has had with lesser teams. Porto and Inter should never have won the Champions League, but he galvanised them and got them playing above there relative capabilities, and he is technically very astute. Im not sure Roma were the best in Europe when they won it either.
He would be able to attract a higher level of player too, and I bet we would be in a better league position when he left, which will give us a better opportunity to progress
