Besides the utter lack of imagination or forward thinking with this appointment, isn’t Moyes a bit shit tactically? I mean, even 10-15 years ago he seemed a bit old fashioned and on his way to becoming a dinosaur.

His recent interview on Gary Neville’s thing did nothing to dispel this for me; he was all eye test, fuck analytics, proper football man bollocks.

Or am I being harsh and a bit negative?

The club simply isn’t in the position to afford a new manager the best opportunity to succeed.

Moyes May feel like a step backwards, but it’s a necessary one, imo.

You can’t just drop a McKenna or a Frank into this situation and expect them to succeed (moot point as you wouldn’t get them midseason, anyway).

Take the above managers; they have:

- stability on and off the pitch
- expertise and decisive decision-makers behind the scenes (board/DoF)
- their clubs are on an upward trajectory (due to the above points). Momentum is massive in football.
- ongoing investment into the club

Unless we get our ducks in a row, we’ll be back here in 6 months time.

I get it though; we’re jaded and we just want to kick-on.

We’ve just got to trust the process (again).

I think you could easily drop Thomas Frank in to this situation and we'd survive, he's shown he's a really good manager.

What we couldn't do is attract him to come and do it, and even if we could we couldn't afford the probably £10m compensation required.

I think a lot of our search will have been very much 'who isn't currently working' because it'd be crazy to spend any transfer money we did have on managerial compensation, or even god forbid exceed PSR again by doing so.

If it is Moyes, ignoring the lack of benefit to him taking a short term deal, it'd also not particularly great for us either.

We have half a season for a new manager to get to grips with the squad, work out who if anyone to renew, start planning for the summer with the huge squad rebuild etc.

I'd much rather we appointed someone on a longer term contract (max 2.5 years) than ask someone to come until the summer and then hope the new man can do all that in a really short space of time.

It’s fair to groan at that but 2.5 years is a perfect amount of time for him to stabilize the club and add quality footballers that will make the (hopeful) transition into a more ambitious style easier.

I think it’s pretty accurate.

I’m not reading too much into the contract.

We gave Sam an 18 month deal but had no intention of keeping him on. I think the same will be happening with Moyes.

I just don’t see him moving the needle enough still be here next season.
