Not sure where you're from but I don't think mongrel is generally a term that gets used much so just a heads up as can be offensive. Has some poor connotations certainly in the uk

He's an Aussie. I don't think it has those connotations over there when used in a sporting context. I hear it used on cricket coverage from time to time, to describe someone who's scrappy and intense.

Ok, wow, never knew that, it's certainly not offensive here but will do my best to remember that. It's in common use here in Aus, name of tough workboots... Intrigued, but will leave it at that.
