He was always good at set pieces (I think) but so was Baines, who is on the coaching staff.

We did have a set piece coach under Dyche and we where good at them for one season then he left and we've been shite at them since.

So who knows, maybe having one does actually make a difference.

To be fair, your ability to manager a team isn't the same as your ability to coach people how to take and defend set pieces.

Maybe we just needed someone to implement a framework at a relatively low cost at very short notice. We are a struggling business after all.

He might well be the very best wet piece coach there ever was. I did see a match report that stated Fleetwood were strong at set pieces.

For me the issue is, its not the departure from the old ways that I was hoping for. Worst case scenario your set piece coach being crap doesnt sink you so it's super low stakes here, it's just a red flag to me that at least for now, this is still very much the Everton we know and hate.

I'm not bothered about the kopite stuff. Not even that bothered about the set piece element of it.

I am bothered by the kip of him though.

Can't really use his spell at Fleetwood as a benchmark, they're a bit of a bampot club, they had three managers last season and they've had about 16 managers in the last 12 years. You can't keep employing young managers on the cheap doing their first job and expect to get away with it.

Was going to talk about professional sportsmen not looking after themselves after retirement but tbf he didn't look that different in his playing days

Think I'll wait and see how we do on set pieces before having any opinion. Proof in the pudding and all that.

Not jokes about him and puddings please!

Even if it works out well and he's the best set piece coach ever in the history of the game I will have the same issue with it.

I couldn't give a flying fuck if he's pushed around in a trolley cos he's 25 stone, if he makes us good at set pieces he'll be sound by me

There's a world where he happens to be a generational talent in set-piece delivery stratagems. That he is the level Nicolas Jover aspires to be.
In that world, maybe it's serendipity that he has professional/personal links to Moyes.

I wouldn't bet my house that it's the same world we live in though.

It’s just moyes getting his mate in isn’t it.

No point pretending otherwise and that’s what some have an issue with.

Maybe he’ll be good, maybe he won’t. I think some people would like us to get away from that type of recruiting though.
