VAR - Vastly Always Rubbish
Re: VAR - Vastly Always Rubbish
Fouls should have uniform penalties. Like in seemingly every other sport. It's the fact it's left up to the whims of the ref is the problem, and it's becoming clearer and clearer that there are refs involved in games that they absolutely shouldn't be.
VAR needs to be challenge based. You have a problem with a decision? You use your challenge and explain exactly what it is your querying. 'We believe player X was offside at this point'. Then the VAR team who are technical software guys not referees queue up the footage requested by the ref to make a decision with maybe the 4th official for a logic check using the pitch side monitors and then they explain the decision to the crowd.
In the instance of yesterday it would have been 'We believe Beto was offside when the ball was played to him'. He wasn't, they lose their challenge, goal stands. No arsing about for 3.5 minutes actively looking for reasons to disallow it. Second half even if we couldn't challenge the non-second yellow for Maguire if the punishments were uniform we wouldn't have to. United would have challenged the foul for the penalty, and the ref reviews all angles. Maybe the decision for the arm across isn't upheld, but either the ref seems the pull and awards the pen anyway, or we challenge it and say 'Look at the pull ref'.
Audio needs to be able to be released more willingly. Full conversations between the ref and players needs to be divulged. Who are they too pally with. Who are they obviously hostile to.

Had to check back because I've seen the Maguire second yellow comment a few times, but he wasn't booked at all, it would have been his first yellow. And definitely should have been.
Re: VAR - Vastly Always Rubbish
Has PGMOL said anything about why they didn’t show the ref the actual clip showing the foul?
Re Var more generally, it’s typical of the arrogance of the people who run football in this country that it’s a) not working and b) they can’t admit it
It works in tons of other sports like nfl, rugby and cricket absolutely flawlessly and with almost no fan complaints or pushback whatsoever. This is in part because rules are clear in those sports and actually get fucking followed, and there’s little to no subjective element.

Re: VAR - Vastly Always Rubbish
The ref gave the pen for a foul by maguire so that’s what they focused on.
It’s stupid as there’s a clear foul by the other centre half but they decided to completely ignore it.
VAR is fine. It’s that people running it that’s the problem.
So many issues with them yesterday.

Re: VAR - Vastly Always Rubbish
The very bottom line is while the rules in var are a big daft they refuse to apply them and they refuse to apply them inconsistently
You've literally no clue what they are going to give when you see the videos. It's not the same in any other sport.
Same with non var decisions too. 1 minute it's a yellow and the next the same thing isn't. No one really questions it. Often we delight in it. Praise a ref for not booking anyone for 70 minutes despite there being 5 or 6 bookable challenges

Re: VAR - Vastly Always Rubbish
I think another issue is the perceived bias towards the established elite... If that had been the other way round would Man UTD have been awarded the penalty? No idea but deep down you feel like they would have been.
Same with taking 3 or more minutes trying to find a way to disallow our goal but when they scored it was a quite 30 second check and all good.
We all remember the Rodri handball, other way round are we really sure it wouldn't have been given... I'm 99.5% it would have.
But then our equaliser against Liverpool wasn't disallowed but we all sit there expecting it to be... So maybe there's not any bias? Or maybe if that's in the 67th minute it gets ruled out but in the 97th with the crowd going wild they didn't have the bottle to disallow it?
There's just no trust in the system that's for sure!

You know what - on the face of it that would be absolutely fine and I'd be ok with it. His decision based on the Maguire tug was wrong and so he overturned it.TheRam wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 9:32 am The ref gave the pen for a foul by maguire so that’s what they focused on.

What bothers me though, was if it was the other way around and we'd commited a series of knocks and bumps on the way to scoring a goal, it seems they have the ability to go back chronologically one incident at a time until they find something to not give it.
Fine, send him to the monitor to confirm the Maguire one wasn't a foul. But whilst he's there ask him to review the incident immediately before it.
Re: VAR - Vastly Always Rubbish
Who actually committed the foul is largely irrelevant here IMHO. The question that VAR needs to answer is "Was the attacking player impeded sufficiently by the defending team to prevent a goalscoring opportunity?" Between Maguire and De Ligt, there was certainly enough "contact" through both shirt pulling and pushing to say yes, Ashley Young was most definitely impeded, which prevented a.goalscoring opportunity and therefore,.the decision to award a penalty in this instance is correct.TheRam wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 9:32 am The ref gave the pen for a foul by maguire so that’s what they focused on.

Be interesting to hear what Howard Webb has to say when decisions are reviewed on Sky - and what the reasoning was for not showing the best view of the incident on the pitchside review. Also where not re-reffing the game or where clear & obvious error comes into it.
That’s if it gets talked about at all, the cynic in me suggests it won’t be.

I think it's cowardice. It's easier to favour the elite. It's easier to give a free kick to a defender just throwing himself to the floor than let a striker run through with the ball.
The Brighton penalty. 100% if the ref actually sees the handball he gives Brighton a free kick for a foul. Just because it's easy
Re: VAR - Vastly Always Rubbish
Does feel like every goal is scrutinised to the nth.
The Beto goal for example, not sure if it's just ally mccoist bleating in my ear but I just couldn't enjoy it. Desperate to look at every angle to find some reason to disallow.

As Moyes said in his press conference 'oh so they've spoken about that part but they've not mentioned the shirt pull? Well that's convenient isn't it?'.Cereal Killer wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 10:57 am “The VAR reviewed the decision to award a foul against Harry Maguire and correctly identified that he committed no offence”
They'll 100% not address the actual foul / fouls and will continue to repeat the offence for which the ref blew was deemed a clear and obvious error.
