I'm not defending him in any way. If it turns out he has got up to four yellows to net a few lumps for his mates then he deserves a good ban but if he gets lifetime then what bigger deterrent is there for a group of players throwing a game? That would be a much bigger, more lucrative market with wider ranging effects on the game. They couldn't get longer than a lifetime ban could they so I worry once players end up in this situation, they might as well get hung for a sheep as a lamb.

He is denying it isn't he?

If he has a gambling problem then shouldn't he get some help?

Or is it something else?

Don't know all the details but that article quotes his lawyer as saying he denies ever placing a bet, but as that's not what he's accused of then I'm not sure he has any way to argue

He denies it absolutely. The allegation is he has deliberately picked up yellows in certain games to land big bets. Absolutely unacceptable if he has but I can think of worse things to do in football that would potentially make you a hell of a lot more money. There's a lot more liquidity in the win/draw/loss market than there is in the player to be booked market.
If you're getting a lifetime ban for the yellow cards (which if proven, I don't defend one iota), what worse sanction are you getting for fixing the result of a match?

*for relatives and people linked to him. There is no allegation he personally placed the bets.

maybe not but i think he has conspired with people he knows to place the bets on his behalf - and tried to distance himself from it?

Yeah, absolutely. If he wasn't linked to anyone who had landed the bets there really would be no case to answer.

Oooft not good reading for the FA, proper flimsy “evidence” and the whole thing just based on one guys opinion

He personally knew 27 people out of the 253 that placed the bets, but its ok he didn't know them through football. Not dodgy at all that!

The FA have got themselves in a complete mess over betting rules. They are flogging the shit out of non league players betting on Premier League telly games with their mates when they have absolutely no influence or inside knowledge on the games involved. This is one from last season but it happens constantly

The Pacqueta case I entirely blame on grasping bookmakers introducing ever more obscure markets to fleece people who can often ill afford to lose the money.
