I'd argue he was a bit better than decent. He was a ginger beacon amongst a pile of shite though. Earl Barret was a weird one, he was brilliant before he came to us but was grim in a blue shirt. My nephew manages university teams over in America and Barret is heavily involved with it over there

He signed for us because of me.
*not really, although I did chat to him at my sister’s pub in Florida during Euro 2000, and I asked him to sign for us, and he said “ Aye, well that could well be happening, kidda” (or something else in Geordie, but he definitely called me kidda)
Did the same with the then teenage Alan Smith, but he was less keen. We did have a drink a few times, though, he was a nice lad.

Yeah Watson was sound.
Always thought his goal against Bolton is massively under rated.
