87 goals in 166 games, including 25 league goals in his final season. Signed for £28m, sold for £75m. I mean come on, he was an unquestionably great signing.
Took me ages to read the rest of this thread after the word "arguably" because it made my brains tall. I just couldn't figure out what it could possibly mean in that context.

He may not be as loved as our greats, but if he had have won something with us there'd be a solid argument to say he was up there with our very best ever.

Yeah I re-read it a few times in case I was missing something.

I suppose in fairness there are 1 or 2 on here who would argue the toss about anything, so maybe it's actually technically correct.

It was meant to sound like Rom and Dom , are the only exception from that list , the rest were shite ,

I mean Haller and Jovic looked like they would be great signings , had bossed it for 2 seasons plus and didn't work.

Let's hope this does if we sign hi m

Yeah, Rom was fantastic for us.

16
20
25
26

In his four seasons here. Doubt we'll get anyone near those levels for some time

Other than Dom and Arguably Rom , we've signed dross
Sandro
Niasse,
Tosun,
Rondon
Kean

Scouts really need to be on the mustard .
There's nothing wrong with our scouting. We've been strongly linked with a fair few strikers the last 3/4 years who have then gone on to step up a level or two and are now out of our range. Its not the scouts faults that we only had IOUs and bags of space raiders to negotiate with.

The thinking was a an arrogant former great player using us as a supposed managerial stepping stone bullying a good scout who had been thrust into a dof role by a madcap new owner.

We paid him 100k a week. No way were we sending him on loan and covering that

Sandro wasn’t really a striker. More of an attacking midfielder who scored a bunch of bangers and free kicks during the exact wrong (from our perspective) season. Koeman flagging him as a goal scorer was indicative of the complete lack of effort he put into his time here, the highlights and underlying numbers did not support him as a 10+ goal a season player.

Kean was good but probably the wrong profile for us. He didn’t do enough in the air or with his feet for a team that has repeatedly leaned on its strikers as an outlet because it can’t play any football. If we had been a well-oiled machine built to supply him with through balls and cut backs, I think he’d have scored plenty to justify his fee.

Barry’s all-around game might be a bit raw but the underlying profile looks good. The fact that he can make pacy runs in behind the defense while also being a menace in the air gives him a higher floor than some of the previous failures mentioned a bit earlier in the thread. I’ll be made up if we get him.

And I’ve said it a million times but Tosun didn’t need to be signed. Nice player who could go either way and finish with either foot but nothing in his physical profile to make an opposition defender break a sweat in the PL. You can’t show off your finishing ability if you can’t get away from your marker.

Epitome of a player who never should’ve made the step up to a big league. Those minutes should’ve continued to go to Dom.

I think this will be an excellent purchase.

22 after a year in La Liga is the ideal time and age to be getting him as well. One good season in the Prem (whether that comes this year or even next), and his value increases significantly.

Looks to have all the attributes to be a young Mateta with the potential to get better and better.

I think you’re forgetting he was part of the evertonian fab four, to rival the shite’s, and he was really fast, allegedly

Yeah, it seemed quite the coup, especially when he scored seconds into his debut (was it against Villereal?)

I was well excited tbh, and about Michael Keane (underlines that I know fuck all)

I remember watching sandro in the u21 tournament that we signed him in and reading an article about what a signing he was for is..... I was thinking then, is there a different sandro as this lad looks really poor
