He was good at what he did at Leeds but the City move killed him. Even his Mom wouldn't have believed he was good enough to get in that midfield and not playing regularly in your peak years can only send you backwards.

The fees and wages involved make this too high risk for me. It's not to say he couldn't go somewhere and recapture some form but there is a very real possibility of this being an expensive flop and we can't afford another.

Imagine if he just came in and ripped it up. He's capable.

He's probably worth 10m a 60k a week. There was talk of them wanting to make a profit before his poor spell at West ham and that the loan fee was something like 8m (for half a season)

There will be better players than Kalvin Phillips that struggle to get in the City side, and lets be honest, hes probably up against the best defensive midfielder in World Football in Rodri, he maybe should have considered the calibre of their squad before moving, but I have no issue with players testing themselves at the highest level - at least he can say he gave it a go. He had a poor spell at West Ham which is true, and that will have damaged his resale value, but it was 6 months and he is worth more than 10m imo. failing at City doesnt mean hes shit and not good enough for us.

I also think he would find it insulting and pretty farcical if we offered him a contract of 23k less than Ashley Young, 17k less than McNeil, 15k less than Doucoure and if we did, why would we even be in for him if we dont think he could contribute more than them!?

He's done absolutely nothing for 2 or 3 years now. He's a complete punt given that and his awful spell at West ham. He could be worth zero when we get him here.

We've done this before work schniderlin and more recently Ali.
Of course not getting in the city team doesn't make you a bad player but that's the kind of argument that sees top clubs get crazy fees all the time. He might very well go somewhere and do well but for me he's not worth the risk at the numbers involved. We can't pay someone 100k plus a week if there's a chance we got what west ham got.

It is a risk, like every signing, but clearly we are confident we wont be getting anything like what West Ham got, otherwise we wouldnt be going near it, although it would be a good negotiating tactic, 'we think you might be shit, but we still want to sign you, but cause we we think you might be shit we'll offer you a contract a quarter of your current one.....'

Philips went from being a success at Leeds and England to being told by Pep he wasn't good enough.

I'd imagine that's very damaging to confidence, and the lack of game time massively affected his fitness levels.

The player at West Ham wasn't the real Kalvin Philips, it was a version with absolute rock bottom confidence and fitness.

I'm pretty confident that under the right manager, one that puts a large onus on fitness and workrate, one that has a system that suits him and gives him the belief again to play at his best then it wouldn't take long to get him back to his best.

I reckon Dyche is the perfect man for the job, and could see Philips flourishing here under him.

I agree. It can also be about levels in training. Imagine turning up at City being full of confidence and then over the next couple of years training with players that are just a little bit too good for you. The level of training at City will be so high that you will get found out quite quickly, and that confidence be once had would start draining away.

Added to that, his injuries would have compounded the above issue.

I still think he would be a good player for a majority of clubs, but competing with Rodri is an impossible task for him, especially when City rely on him so much. He needs game time and a manager that understands the above issues. I do think this would be a good environment for him but we shouldn’t pay over the odds to get him here.

No excuses for him not being fit enough though he is a professional footballer peak fitness should be a non negotiable
