£40m on potential and raw from abroad seems a bit excessive.

Going rate, yeah.

I think it’s more than potential though. He’s demonstrated a fairly high level of performance in La Liga and has all the physical tools to adapt to a more physical league.

Not sure the significance of that statement, every single club is aware of his availlability.

I know it's been said a million times before but we really need to be scouting from these 2nd tier leagues like Switzerland, Denmark, Austria, Belgium etc rather than buying them a year after they move to La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A etc for exorbitant fees.

Like Barry was playing for Basel til August 2024, and moved to Villareal for €14m and less than a year later we might be paying €40m for him.

Diomande at Rangers went from Nordsjælland in January 2024 for €5m, and now we're being quoted €24m to get him 18 months later.

Even Onana when we got him. We paid around €40m, when less than a year earlier Lille paid €13m for him from Hamburg.

I don't blame European clubs for ripping the Prem off in the slightest. It's a sound model for them. But if we're going to find a competitive advantage in some of our transfer dealings within our league we need to be going to the source, and cut out these year long middle men.

Rather we take a risk in young potential then settle for someone older, we know he see have Beto for a consistent option. Think 40 million is a lot though, unlikely to make your money back like a Moise Kean unless they do well

I wonder if it’s a matter of actually doing the scouting or simply being willing to act on what the scouts are seeing even if it’s in a less competitive league.

Obviously, Moshiri put a premium on PL players or players abroad at top clubs and was willing to overpay massively to get them.

We’ve done a bit better recently, looking more at the Championship and Ligue 1 where prices are more reasonable. That has been underscored by Thelwell and Dyche seeming to have a better working relationship than any other head of recruitment and manager in the Moshiri era.

The next step is to be a bit braver and mix in players from unheralded leagues before they blow up, like you say. The most important part of that will be having manager and recruitment team on the same page regarding what types of player profiles are needed.

Will be interesting to see how this shakes out this summer. We need quite a few players and can’t afford for all of them to come from “safer” leagues, some risks will have to be taken.

Even the players we've signed from lesser teams abroad we've often still gone for players who've played in the premier league before (Ndaiye and Alcaraz) so we don't exactly take a great deal of risk... Both fantastic buys at fairly low prices so very smart moves, but like you said we need some moderate risk / high reward signings that don't cost much and have the potential to be of use now and flip for big bucks down the line.
