No excuses for him not being fit enough though he is a professional footballer peak fitness should be a non negotiable
Im sure he was fit, but theres being fit and theres being match fit. If you havent played the best part of 18 months the latter is going to take a bit to get back too

Could argue that's what Moyes does and he got fuck all in return
Yeah but he brought him in halfway through a season where his confidence was rock bottom and his match fitness zero.
You need to get him in over the summer and build both up ready for the season beginning and then allowing him time to regain that match confidence and belief over the first few games.
If you come.in during the January window you're expected to hit the ground running, and a player devoid of all confidence isn't going to thrive in those conditions.

You need to swerve him because he's obviously washed, don't waste any more time on this fella who has had Pep and Moyes, two of the prems greatest ever coaches, who were looking for Rice and Rodri back ups, take a look and say no I literally cannot use this guy whatsoever.

There were concerns about his weight when he was on the bench at city, during a season. Probably burnt out after Bielsa ball and hasn’t recovered

I’d be quite happy with a loan plus option and city covering some wages. In terms of risk and reward it would be seen as a miracle deal not too long ago. Time was we’d have bought him for 30m and gave him 125k wages. £8m is a bit much for a 6 month loan fee though given his poor West Ham stint so I imagine we’re haggling over that.

I just don't see how it works. The option to buy would still probably be 30m and he's earning 200k a week at city which he's not going to want to give up. He probably wouldn't be a transfer we could afford to make permanent regardless.
He is not a smart transfer for us, not even on loan. He is absolutely the type of transfer we would have made when we were creating our financial mess

Hes on 150k according to reports and hes acknowledged he will have to take a pay cut to secure his next deal. City wont get 30m for him, it was also rumoured they wanted to re-coup half their investment, so probably looking around 20-23m.
If, and I agree, its still a big if, he got to the end of the initial loan and managed to get back to somewhere near his best I think most would agree that 20ish million would represent a pretty decent deal, and as our top earner are on 110k a week that doesnt seem unrealistic, and probably something he would warrant, if he gets back to where he was, if not, bin him off.

Even with a loan fee of 8mill and paying him 95k a week for a 9 month season it's going to cost us over 10 million quid. Then in 9 months time we're back to square one whether he does any good or not.
That's money we can't spend anywhere else. Pretty disappointing if after 4 years with the same director of football this is the best we can do.

Am not even sure we were ever remotely interested in him, maybe I missed something in the last ten pages ?

I think it's a psychological issue. He was great for Leeds, went to the big time with City... couldn't cut it at that level..move to London and couldn't adapt even under Moyes because he was unhappy and frustrated. Dyche will work the head on him and restart his career.

It's a terrible idea. Sure, you could make the case that a player was in a "too much, too soon" location (City) and confidence just took a tumble.
If he was 23 or 24. Kalvin Phillips is 28 years old. Your best case is a dead cat bounce (Barkley at Luton), where he's still pricey and temporary. But most of the time, you'll get Jesse "I can FIX him!" Lingard.

His age isn’t a worry for me, it’s not like he’s ever been the most mobile or athletic so it’s going nowhere with age.
IF (and it’s a big if mind you) he can get back to form then he’s still got four or five seasons in him at the top level.

No obligation to loan, no obligation to buy.
