It was very depressing but thankfully, not based on reality. Lots of perhaps/probably/maybe/obviously type vibes, but it's a nice theory.

I don't agree with the negativity towards Moyes, he's been left in the lurch big time as it stands, huge gaps not just in the squad but in the starting 11.

What other team could he have picked yesterday? McNeil left wingback, Garner right... Barry up front. There wasn't an obvious competent team that he refused to pick.

Not sure it was all tactics, you could see the players getting frustrated with the negativity, especially with the passes coming out from the back four. Part of it has to lie with the players, Keane & Garner played super safe all night and O'Brien was probably the worst we've seen him on the ball.

Hence why I was critical of Keane for going back to pickford when he could have played a simple pass to Grealish to keep building a move.

Passing networks were entirely fucked.

I think we’d have been fully in the shit with a back three/five. Overloading that area further wouldn’t have helped us progress the ball.

Moyes had two reasonable choices - Garner at LB, Tim to CM or McNeil at LB, Garner to DM. He sort of made the former (I think letting Tim stay deepest was a mistake, we only functioned when he and Gana switched). The latter would have been better for passing out of the back BUT McNeil has no experience that I know of playing in a back four and holding a line while Garner does. Moyes did exactly what I’d expect and went with the more experienced defender. Probably helped his choice that McNeil had a greater chance of struggling with James’ pace.

Obviously the choice he made messed up our passing from the back and left us in the shit for long stretches. Get this man the four extra players he needs so we never have to play Tim or start Charly again. I can’t fault the LB situation too much, we have two naturals and both were unavailable. Even Branthwaite would’ve done better in build ups than Garner (not a knock on him, it’s a horribly unnatural position for him).

I’m more critical of how it got as far back as Keane in the first place - we were on the attack then started going backwards for some reason
