Probably that he thinks he’ll actually get a game here.
Villa have just spent £50m on Onana to play in his position, if he wanted to city on a bench then he could do it at City

I don't think it'll work out but I guess it is what it is. Goodison will eat him alive if the West Ham version of him shows up.

Guess it's just a case of if Dyche can get a tune out if him.
I personally think he's a busted flush. But hey, here's hoping he can rediscover his passion for the game and we get the Leeds version.

Feels lazy.
If Moyes couldn’t get anything out of him, I don’t expect Dyche to either but you never know.

We need somebody of his type though.
On loan it might be worth the risk if we can’t spend much more money.
With the takeover off I imagine that has changed plans no matter how much the local press try and spin it.
I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s all our money spent now and it’s loans and frees from here on in.
I think dyche can get him fit and motivated but it’s all up the player if he wants it.
Does strike me as the type of lad who believed the hype a bit and has lost the motivation though.
Could be a bit Fabian Delph, could be a bit Gareth Barry.
I wonder if we’ll ever get past doing this sort of thing in the market though.
20 years of getting big club cast offs with varying results.

Don’t like this, really don’t know if we can do any better than what West Ham tried to do.
Unless Moshiri interviews Bielsa again and asks if he is still interested in a role at Everton to get the best out of Phillips. Or we could always get Dyche an upside down bucket to sit on.
Any other more original midfield targets we could go for?

All of our business can’t be promising players on the way up, as much as we’d like it to be because they aren’t always going to work, either. For every Branthwaite there are a dozen Koldrups.
Sometimes you also need to add a bit of tried and tested into the mix as well. Which is why I’m wary of this if it goes through. This lad’s been tried, tested and discarded.

Can’t really disagree with any of the comments on here, because this is a real unknown.
I would say that there is more upside than downside given that it is a loan and that his City career is over, but there is a chance that he just can’t handle the workload and doesn’t have it in him anymore.

I think he'd have needed to be with Dyche on day 1 of preseason to have stood a chance of making a meaningful impact this season

I'm not for it at all but he's got the ability. On a loan I suppose it's low risk like Danjuma was

We need a midfielder, and we've probably spent all our funds... So it's smart to get a player in however we can. I'd MUCH rather take a chance on Kalvin Philips than take a chance of going in to the season with purely what we have currently available.
Dyche will get him fit and believing in himself, if there's a perfect manager for Phillips and a perfect player for Dyche then this is it. Pretty confident this will be a successful loan.

Yeah he’ll do fine - let’s give him a chance as this is probably his last one in fairness

Agree with that. Assume City were hopeful someone would have been interested in a permanent move for him but after more poor showings from him in preseason they now probably just want rid.
Dont think it's a great move personally. As others have said, would have thought Moyes would have been able to get a tune out of him but he ended up making way too many mistakes. Would be surprised if Dyche is able to do anything with him.
