West Bromwich Albion head coach James Morrison says the Football Association have "opened a can of worms" over Aune Heggebo's two-match ban for deception.

Jimmy-Jay Morgan's cross hit Heggebo's hand on its way into the net to give Albion the lead in their 2-1 win over Norwich City on the first day of the Championship season.

The Norway international forward last week became the first player to be charged with "deception of a match official" since the rule was introduced in the 2017-18 season.

Morrison said the incident was accidental and that the onus had not been on the player to tell referee Tim Robinson.

"We wanted to back Bo because he's not that type of person," he told BBC Radio WM.

"He was upset because he was saying it [the charge] was calling him a cheat, basically, and we all know he's not that.

"He'll be looking at the cross when it came in, it flicked from the goalkeeper's hands into him.

"He's not going to run to the referee is he, and say, 'I handballed that'? Not in a million years.

The "disappointed" Albion boss said the ban had opened "a can of worms for the FA" to punish what they deem as deception.

Heggebo, 25, missed Sunday's 3-1 win over Burnley in the Championship and will also miss the Carabao Cup tie away to Newcastle United on Wednesday (19:45 BST).

"If they're going to do it, we accept it, but they've got to be consistent throughout the season," Morrison added.

"Be consistent throughout the season and we can all deal with that."

Honestly wtf is this all about? I haven't seen the incident but I think the manager has made a good point that surely it's not on the player to confess to it hitting his hand?

But players cheat all the time, they pretend to have not committed a foul, or pretend the ball didn't come off them so they get the corner or throw in.

It's a farcical application of the rules imo

Just watched it - Only he knows if it was deliberate or not but there’s no way he didn’t know he handled it. Didn’t know that rule even existed to be honest and it’s surprising both that it’s the first time the rule has been applied in nearly 10 years and also that someone other than us were the first to be punished for it!

But you’re right players do cheat all the time and it’s pretty much universally accepted. Kind of does my head in at times so no real sympathy in this case. I think Morrison trying to excuse it was a bit daft but he’s right in that the rule has to be applied consistently across the board or not at all.

It raises the question - if it’s a game with VAR, and a player did the same thing and ran off to celebrate scoring a goal, only for the goal to be disallowed by VAR - does the player get punished for trying to deceive the officials?

So, is the onus on the player now to go and tell the ref he made a mistake and it should be a free kick against him?

Oh yeah cheating does my head in too... But I fail to see any argument that if a player scores via his hand he's expected to do anything other than peel away and celebrate hoping the officials didn't spot it.

I suppose the argument is that he knows he’s cheated. But as we said it’s so ingrained within the game that it’s accepted.
