Is this squad that good or did we get carried away a bit like we always do?
Our attackers are really strong, but defensively (keeper aside) and the midfield isn't great. I've been really disappointed with Rice, particularly.
I think it is that good.
It's the team and tactics
Rice has been one of the best players in the Prem. There is a reason he has been shocking here.
Wrong position.
Mainoo, Wharton, Bellingham in a different position.
An out of form very fucking slow Kane breaking every attack down etc
The squad is exceptional. But the team and th3 tactics aren't good enough

Also I know he is out boy but Branthwaite !!
A fit Shaw would make a difference.
Do we have one LB in England???
Chillwell? Where is he?

I think most managers would give an organ to have that squad, plus plenty decent players that didn't even make it.

It's definitely is that good, but just look how poorly Walker has been playing, how uninvolved Foden has been... Is Stones bringing the ball forward out for defence? Nope.
Kane does look like he's running through treacle mind, but even then he's a deadly goal scorer but we aren't creating any chances for him.
The most bizarre element for me is that he's got Walker playing as a right sided CB in a back 3 when we have the ball, and Trippier in line with Kane on the left wing. Obviously Trippier can't do anything but cut back and play it backwards or at best sideways, so why not have the wrong footed left back playing as the left CB in possession and have the right back pushed right up where they can cross the ball or go past their man?
It's why Saka's been so poor as he's experiencing the 'Harrison effect' of no overlapping full back and being doubled up on by the opposition.
It's bloody maddening because even without a left back we should be blowing teams like Slovakia away.

It’s all tactics, or complete lack of them
Seems to be in possession, “keep it as long as possible, don’t take any risks of gifting the ball away and stay in position” which just results in us passing it slowly round the back with nobody moving

Oh I agree where we are is all down to tactics and how he's setting us up.
I just don't think our defence and midfield (in the squad he's picked here) is as strong as has been made out.

Yes the defence was always going to be the weak part, which makes it even more infuriating that he doesn’t utilize our strength in anyway

It's not just tactics. Or rather, it's more bad coaching of tactics than the tactics itself.
For example I doubt Southgate told them to stand still and wait for the ball to come to them. Or take four touches to pass a ball.
They do it because they aren't sure what exactly is expected of them, where the others will be and so on.

Please be true!
I saw a really good tactical analysis of the Swiss and how what we've been using won't work against them, and how 3-4-3 would give us a much better chance of exploiting how narrow they defend.

I'm actually warming to the idea of 3 at the back.
