Genuinely surprised he is such long odds. After Potter and Carsley then he'd be the next most likely English option imo. I don't think Howe would leave Newcastle.

I'd be amazed if Dyche was even considered. Despite the job he's done for us, I think this would go down in a similar vein to Big Sam.
He would do a better job than Southgate, but it would be dull as hell and wouldn't excite anyone. Carsley or Potter for me, although I'd take Ancelotti as unrealistic as that is.

Southgate's shown that being an England manager isn't just about what you do on the pitch, but also the culture off it, and that's why I see Potter as being ideal... Seems to have the Southgate integrity whilst being far more astute a tactician.

Carsley won the under 21s though and apparently played inverted full backs so maybe he's got the more modern approach to tactics Southgate failed to adopt, so can see potential in promoting him too.

My concern with Potter is that it takes him a while to coach his philosophy into teams, and he won't get that at international level.

It's Carsley for me, about time we had a Brummie in charge.

Does the FA care about attractive football and tactics though? I'm pretty sure they would have kept Southgate for the next 5 tournaments if they could. Dyche is also a bit of a yes man that will protect them from any criticism which I'm sure would go in his favour.

Tbh that's true, I suppose I was assuming they would've listened to the mood music and maybe gone for someone more progressive, but at the same time, they were apparently willing to offer him a new deal, so who knows

I don't think that's an issue tbh... Yes at club level maybe, but I'm pretty confident the likes of Bellingham, Foden, Mainoo, Stones, Saka etc wouldn't have any issues playing whatever formation or tactic he'd ask of them.

We've got a bunch of world class players or players with that potential that would have no problem playing a possession based game with an onus on attacking and creating chances, in fact I think they'd revel in the opportunity.
