Maybe it's because I'm older now, but I hated people who got 'our' tickets when they had no connection to us, whilst people who went home and away every week couldn't get one. These were the days you paid in, but cup games were tickets. They later became the prawn sandwich brigade

I’m sure I remember my old man paying 2/6p at the turnstile for me and I remember paying 10 Bob for myself some time in the early 70’s , was never in the boys pen for a tanner though !

Really, really good point this.

Hadn't thought about how a "low level" corp/hospitality/premium ticket is a really effective way to combat tours.

Who's paying £200 for a touted ticket when that's the price range for a "package" (albeit a pretty lame one as Gash's number crunching shows)

Yeah, I've said this before, it's the lure of the Premier League and most people just want to see a game. Whether it's us or Liverpool or to see the away team there will always be people happy to pay a bit more just to see a game. If they're on holiday and travelling around the UK or Europe another 2-300 quid isn't going to be too hard to find. Those who are a bit more vain will love to tell their friends and family that that the bought a 'premium' ticket just to add to their story.

Been guilty of it myself, went to Barcelona a few years ago and got tickets to a game at the Nou Camp, we're part of that now whether we like it or not, especially with the new stadium. In fairness to the club, maybe that's why the've put the Premium seats all together and in the corner away from the best seats, they know they'll sell them but they also know most who buy it will be casual fans or day trippers who won't do much singing or shouting so no point giving them the best seats.

They’re also appealing to well healed away fans who would normally never get an away ticket.

Can someone ELI5 the process of getting a ticket these days if you are not a STH?

I've resigned myself to the idea I'll be unable to initially until the initial book wears off tbh.

As someone who will probably only be able to get to one game a season due to life, time and distance, I'm basically being pushed towards buying a premium ticket by the club.

Unless demand calms down and i can get a general sale ticket at some point, membership plus ticket will be around 110-120 quid.

But there seems little point in me buying a membership if i might not even get in the ballot for any game i choose.
So rather than possibly wasting 60 quid, i think I'd rather spend an extra 40-50 quid to guarantee i can get a ticket.
Or not go.

Cup games might become a lot more lively.
I can still remember games with a half-empty Goodison in the early rounds, even against decent competition at times.

Expecting a full house for a 2nd round League Cup game against Chesterfield at this rate.

I think it'll calm down in time but the early games were always going to be hard to get tickets for. If parking's still an issue come the winter months then I don't think people will travel to games then have to walk miles for the car on a cold, pissing wet December night, although looking around there seems to have been a few small car parks sprung up around the ground over the last few weeks.

Is it Walter Street I think, near the Titanic, 300 odd spaces made into a secure car park, saw someone say there'd been one made on the junction of Commercial Road and Stanley Road as well. Fully expect to see a few more appear on land around the ground, or even just people with empty land and opening it up on matchdays, be nice little earner for land that's otherwise not doing very much.

I think on saturday, and the first home game I'm just going to train it to Lime Street and walk it to the stadium. Not sure I can be arsed dealing with the traffic and worrying where to park.

It essentially involves a long baton and lube.

AKA Buying the Membership + tier at £60, then you will get emailed when you can enter a ballot to buy a ticket. You select two stands (primary and secondary choice) and if you are successful you will find yourself out of pocket for £65-£75 one morning. Then a day later you will get an email saying you were successful. If you aren't successful you will still have the money and no email. If you want to buy for a second person, they must also have a membership at the same tier.
