I'd say as bland as it may seem, Norgaard and Johnston improve us over last season.

One sits properly and will give us the positional discipline we need in CM, and the other is an actual RB that not only knows how to play the position, but has the knock on effect of JOB at CB instead of Keane.

For an outlay of around £22m for both, given we seem unable to spend anything meaningful, is as good as we can probably hope for.

Doesn't mean I'm advocating these signings over better, younger players,.but I think there's a fairly big disconnect between people's wants, and what the club can actually spend.

Happy with this. Quality player for his preferred position. Good experience and leadership qualities too. Fresh after last seasons bench warming.

I think once he's in, you look at possibly getting a high quality loan for Harrison Armstrong (like Branthwaite at PSV say), and you look to sell Alcaraz and/or Iroegbunam and you've got a nice compliment of midfielders and a bit of spending money to add to the pot.

I imagine that is Armstrong out on loan then. Probably Tim becomes a big question mark too, especially with 1 year left on his contract.

I see games like the one today though and do wonder if shouldn't just look to play Armstrong at this point. We have a decent amount of younger players and they do need minutes. That's probably the main negative.

Otherwise, it's probably one you'd put in the "it's fine" column.

Similar age to Xhaka with significantly lower fee and that turned out to be an incredible signing despite seeming mad at the time. He might not have the same impact but Arsenal signed him for a reason so I’m quite happy with it on paper. Starts when fit imo and rightly so.

The only similarity to Xhaka is the age and the position they play.

Theres no comparison in quality of the players and their careers.

IMO Gueye plays a lot more for Arsenal last season than he did.
It's not a bad signing, but some of these deals and rumours certainly feel like Moyes is starting to get his way

Would you not possibly agree that if we've only got about £20m to spend it's probably more a case of buying what we can afford?

Like is Moyes demanding Norgaard and Johnston for a combined £20m approx, over Gueye and Doue at a combined £70m?

Would probably make more sense to me to keep Gueye on the same contract we could've for an extra year, then invest the little money we had on one player, rather than let Gueye go, whose probably better than Noorgard, then have to invest what little money we have on two average players

Yeah, I wish he moved the ball like Xhaka. They’re not similar at all.

He’s much more like Gana except less athletic and more disciplined positionally. Still covers a ton of ground, or has in the past.

I think Hackney is the one who’s going to grow into the deep playmaker role given the time to make it his own. Comfortable taking the ball on the half-turn and always looking to play it through the midfield line to an attacker.

I think the balance works with one defensive type who’s tough physically (Garner, Norgaard) and one playmaker type (Hackney, hopefully Armstrong some day).

Happy with this for now. Need to get rid of Iroegbubam or Alcaraz or both. Cash in Garner and sign some younger with bigger upside next summer.
