It’s nice to think we’ve not got players in because we’re being ambitious but I doubt that’s the case.

Think we’ve just been really slow off the mark and don’t have a coherent idea of what we need and how we go after it.

It’s already been a failure. Left too much to do with so little time.

It’ll just get more desperate as the window goes on.

Just hoping we do enough to be competitive by the end of the window.

Apparently we were quoted £65m for Diao from Como, so the market is a little crazy at the moment due to the prices that the other lot and Chelsea are paying routinely.

The recruitment team was put together quite late on and it feels like we've been really slow out of the blocks because of this. The transfer committee or whatever it is didn't seem the right way to go about it either and Moyes probably has too much influence for us to go the 'Brighton way' about things. Anzou and Barry signings are good but Moyes has said that neither will be rushed into the starting 11. The starting 11 has gone a little backwards with the loss of Doucoure etc. Think we're in a bit of trouble if we don't get a move on, a nice shiny new stadium and a relegation battle. Poor from the new owners really knowing what we were walking into since they took over.

Ultimately if they haven't identified enough players of the correct quality and availability, and haven't been able to get them over the line, then it's a failing of the recruitment team. Market forces is an excuse.

I'm choosing to see this like England's 1st (or 3rd) Test matches against India this summer.

Went against us for long periods but we did enough things right to keep ourselves in the fight, before closing out unlikely wins.

"It's a good job Test cricket is played over 5 days." Well, it's a good job the transfer window is open until the end of the month. Plenty can - and will - happen between now and the end of the month, and while it would be much better to bring in our first choice players now and bed them into the team, sometimes that just isn't possible.

But it doesn't mean we're out the running just yet.

Just another consequence of our terrible finances of recent years, bent over in negotiations

The transfer window can still be a success as long as we navigate it correctly from here.

We need to realise the situation that we are in and be pragmatic. Loan deals, short term contracts as well as some of the longer term deals are needed.

We cannot do everything in one window, and now it appears that we will do even less after a very poor start. But we just cannot go into the season with the squad numbers that we have. That’s just asking for serious trouble.

Not buying that at all - didn't we get like £4m for him?

I know it's all the rage to bash the club at the minute but £4m for a youth prospect who then only sells for slightly more two years later is fine, even if we'd negotiated a lower fee and higher sell on then we'd likely be worse off.

£3.5m and 15% of profit would have netted us £3.95m instead of £4m

Clubs outside the top six can sign players.
It’s just clubs with half-assed, faff-about recruitment teams that are struggling.
Genuine question - which of those Sunderland players do you think are "first team players" for us?

There is only Habib Diarra who I think we would maybe want and they've overpaid for him, even so he wouldn't be walking into our 11 despite the £30m fee.

Would all be first team players for us considering how short we are in a lot of areas.

Would say diarra and Xhaka definitely start, and the young right winger they bought simply because he’s a right sided player.

The rest all easily make our match day squad.

Same for Leeds and quite a few of Burnleys signings.

Sunderland’s midfield is worryingly a lot, lot better than ours.

I think it’s obvious that we are currently lacking both quality and numbers. There isn’t a team in the top flight who wouldn’t have us down as a potential 3 points right now. Again, I hope it changes, but right now it feels like we are hoping three from Leeds, Sunderland, Burnley, Brentford and Wolves have less points than us at the end of the season. That and the fact we are playing in a new stadium will just add to the jitters. I’m worried.

Didn’t say they would/could/should be “first team players” for us.

My point was that there are clubs outside of the top six who are doing business, in the case of twice relegated Sunderland, over 150m worth of business. That was all.
