And then there was his ridiculous attitude to goals scored from a corner or a set piece. That interview he did with Carragher genuinely terrified me to death.

We'd be where Wigan are now had we kept him much longer.

One of the worst things he did was proceed to unravel the Moyes defensive unit. Criminal damage.

It's not the passing approach that was the problem. He just had a terrible understanding of tiki-taka football. Good passing teams teams pass the ball beautifully because they have players who are also relentless ball winners and ruthless defenders. He was out sick the day they taught that part. Nice man, though.

How about we just sign literally any attacking player who is technically strong so we can create from open play - then as a bonus that person can almost certainly take a decent set piece

Yes no reason to make it more complex than it is. Goals win games and we don't have players who can create goals.

We were pretty awful at moving the ball in a way that created attacking gaps. Spent all of our time working on moving the ball and still couldn’t break down a half-decent defense.

I think all of our best performances after his first season were ruthless counterattacking performances.

Pleasant seeming man from the outside but I cannot agree that someone who was such a pathological liar is nice. His approach to everything was to tell people exactly what they want to hear. It what he said turned out not to be true and someone came back with receipts, he’d just do it again. I don’t know if he’s just so relentlessly optimistic that he believes what he’s saying or if he’s actually kind of a nasty person that simply knows how to deflect everything with positivity.

Sorry for perpetuating yesterday’s conversations.

I think of one of the unfortunate side-effects of our high manager turnover is we really haven’t spent enough meaningful time with anyone to be able to reflect properly on their strengths, weaknesses, etc. The same can be said for players given the squad turnover.

Really hope we get back to a stable place where we can actually form real relationships with managers and players again, even if they’re not always perfect.

I remember reading it and being absolutely horrified. It was an insight into how utterly clueless he was

“I always believe that a goal from open play is a more satisfying goal,” said Martinez. “Dead-ball situations are a big part of the game, don’t get me wrong. But you are a winning team when you don’t rely on set-pieces and I do prefer open play goals – I’m not going to hide it.”
