As far as player development goes - if you aren’t an experienced pro, he’s going to make you run through a wall to get into the team. The ones who earn his trust end up having long careers but he wastes plenty of talent with those standards too. We could’ve used Barkley’s spark a season or two before Martinez came but he was never professional enough to meet Moyes’ demands.

The standard is even higher for defensive players, bordering on unreasonable. He often makes centre backs play as fullbacks before he trusts them in their natural position. Coleman is the only fullback I recall him developing and he only gave him chances in the first team after he excelled with Blackpool. And he had to deputize as a winger before he earned opportunities at right back.

I hope Aznou hangs on for another season until we hire someone willing to let him hone his defensive positioning and decision making in actual matches. Probably best to waste money on an established RB for this season and target a longer-term solution next summer.

We were linked with a different Burnley defender a couple of times this summer, so I would imagine it's that player not Kyle Walker.

Barkley could have turned out more like Baines or Coleman, and not had a career which stuttered in comparison to his potential, had he stuck around, endured more of the guidance and knuckled down... Who really knows.

Thierry Barry appears to be adding some grit, desire and determination to his game, in word as well as deed. Who knows what or who could have triggered that. The environment? Early doors but given his particularly difficult position it's a positive sign. I think there are enough green shoots to show progress is being made.

As an extra/aside, I think it's very unlikely we're going to be making the same sorts of sub-optimal decisions/non decisions around the development of youngsters Armstrong, Aznou and Dibling this time around, based on what happened this time last year.

The club was in upheaval behind the scenes with the ownership and structure changes, and the people that are now in these decision-making seats either weren't there then, were in different seats, or had just walked in the door.

Getting things right from top to bottom isn't an instantaneous change, it's a process, something that we fans often find hard to grasp.

The signings we have made so far are a pretty good indication that we're on a much more sensible and sustainable track than we've been for some time. The pre-litmus performances look encouraging.
