Is that true? That is a painful stat.

If he has a preseason and the loan deal is good value then I think it'd be a good move for us.

Surely we wouldn't sign up for daft wage contributions in our financial situation.... oh god, we will won't we.

Beggars can't be choosers and all that. There's certainly still a player in there, reckon Dyche can get the best out of him with a good pre-season and if he can regain some form, it could well be a great move for both parties.

Sensible wages and and no loan fee, and it makes a lot of sense.

Loan fees fell like dead money. I'd like us to be a bit more creative and get something from our scouting network.

We aren't capable, but not for that reason.
I don't think people understood my point... Brighton make great decisions but also take gambles too, and they're a fairly decent proposition for a player looking to move to the premier league.

We will be fighting for our lives again, can't gamble too much, and are very unappealing to most players with a few premier league clubs chasing them.

Our entire transfer strategy has to be different to Brighton's because of the predicament we're in. I'd love to follow their recruitment process, but we are so far away from being stable enough to do that.

Until then we need to take someone like Philips on loan if we can get him as he presents a solid, premier league ready and proven talent at this level player.

Providing of course the fees involved are low and workable.

Wages have gotten us in the shit every bit as much as transfer fees. Perhaps more. Giant red flags everywhere.

Trowel wrote: Tue May 28, 2024 5:24 pm My concerns are Phillips is 28, would require an astronomical wage contribution and a decent loan fee, and he's very recently proven not to be Moyes-fit let alone Dyche-fit.

In short, he fits the profile of who we were signing 5-6 years ago, which is what I hope we're moving away from.

Would Brighton sign him?
Brighton signed Milner, Lallana and Wellbeck mate lets not use them as a barometer for sensible long term signings. Every club has to do business like this.

Feel like the Brighton thing is getting very confusing.

They always sign players for low fees.

They have signed lots of loans.

They have signed lots of frees.

They can afford to...because they're so good? And magically got in that position from constantly battling relegation under Houghton** because...for some reason? I dunno.

They’re so good they can’t beat us under dyche.

Jokers.

Even the games we’ve drew they were very lucky.

They should be looking at us and what we’re doing right imo

Sorry I'm not saying they're dead good, altho obviously they are, I just mean trying to follow what people are saying, oh we couldn't do business like the mighty Brighton they can afford to take risks etc

I'm just keen to hear commentators tongue-tied and hyphen-ventilating, as Kalvin-Phillips' well-weighted and nicely-timed cross-field ball is cushioned one-touch by a double-teamed Calvert-Lewin, into the path of cool-headed Smith-Rowe's well-timed run, as he side-foots it home. 3-0.

Also I feel that it gets a bit lost that Brighton do spend money and don't just shop around in the Guatamala second division.

They've signed a few players over £20m and number between £15-20m. They just spend their money really, really, wisely and keep the train moving by selling for peak.

Pedro £30m
Caicedo £25m
Adam Webster £20m
Bart the keeper £20m
Carlos Baleba £25m
Mwepu £20m

And supplementing with experienced frees to be in and around the youngsters is another thing they do really well. All part of their strategy and why they're the best run club in the league.

I think basically what I was trying to convey was that us and Brighton are in very different positions and have different requirements at this moment in time. Phillips for them would probably be a weird signing, but for us it'd make a whole lot of sense.

I'm obviously ignoring the fact we finished with the same number of points as them last season though, which maybe invalidates my argument.
