PSR works by what the player costs over the terms of his contract.

If our club income allows us to spend 75 million this summer. That could very well be 7 50 million pound players over the course of five year deals. That wouldn't mean that next year there is nothing.

The problem before is we overspent that threshold without having anyone to sell.

But it is though.

The only way we have £75m to spend this summer is by selling Branthwaite. That means that next year even with some increase in revenue from BM we'll still need to sell players to make up the difference just to cover the payments on what we spent this year. So then without even more sales we'll not be able to spend anything.

I don't think we'll be finishing top 4 in 3 seasons, I think saying it's possible just sets you up for disappointment.

So we buy 7 players this summer worth £50m each.

Dismissing the fact we actually pay the majority of that upfront, our books allow us to amortise it over the contract. So this year "only" shows 7 x £10m on the books.

So we are £70m in the red with PSR this year.
And we start next year on minus £70m again before any player trading.

And every year after that until the 5th year.

We become utterly reliant on selling to buy in the first year of moving into the new stadium

I said it “shouldnt” be beyond our reach and it shouldn’t be, whether we do or not is another matter.

The reason it becomes hard even for top 5 is that once you start qualifying for Europe your league form suffers unless you're one of the elite with huge squads.

We could conceivably finish 9th, 7th (quality for conference league), 12th, 6th (qualify for Europa), 9th.

I think you're right about needing to aim high and bring back the standards we used to have under Moyes before, but for me it'd to be in and around the European places in 3 seasons and try become a regular in that bracket be it 5th or 7th from there on.

We’ve barely survived for the last few seasons and now top 5 within three seasons?

I like a lofty aim but that’s delusional

Even if we were the only team to improve our squad and everyone else sat on their hands doing nothing we wouldn’t get top 5

I think even when we were in a better place in Moyes first time here we always hoped we consistently being chasing the top four but it rarely happened so it's still a big leap to get back there in the next three or four years from out current starting position. We can't even beat Bournemouth at the moment never mind qualify for the Champions League.

All the top clubs (apart from the shite) are a bit of a mess these days, so if that continues then competing for Europe is a lot easier than it was in the end of Moyes' first spell here was here where it seemed that 5 of the 'big 6' would always end up top 6.
