David Moyes is reviewing a list of potential January targets as Everton prepare to dip into the transfer market “creatively” this month.
Everton’s recruitment plans, drawn up by director of football Kevin Thelwell, have been disrupted by the departure of Sean Dyche and the return of Moyes, who is looking to add more attacking edge alongside support at full-back.
That partly explains the conflicting messages on the club’s pursuit of Lyon’s Ghana winger Ernest Nuamah, a long-standing target.
With limited room for manoeuvre, Moyes wants to ensure that any incomings are able to improve his team immediately.
Moyes’ impact at Everton has been swift and positive – with Sunday’s 3-2 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur showcasing a more attacking and adventurous style of play than the risk-averse Dyche, who admitted he had taken the club as far as he could – but one victory doesn’t obscure the continuing challenges Everton face.
The Friedkin Group is intent on backing Moyes ahead of a more profound revamp of recruitment in the summer, but Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) mean there are few “quick fixes”.
Everton have been offered free agent Willian but nothing is imminent.
The club must also balance arrivals with exits, to ensure they don’t have to sell players before the 30 June “soft” PSR deadline.
Striker Beto is among those Everton would allow to leave for the right price and there is interest from several Italian clubs.
Financial experts predict Everton have £5m-10m in PSR headroom to play with in the next fortnight.
In theory, they could spend up to £40m because, from a PSR perspective, a player signed for £40m on a four-and-a-half year contract would go on the books as £4.5m after amortisation is taken into account.
In reality, lower-value deals and overseas loans are more likely.
The owners are eyeing changes when the PSR situation eases significantly in July – and large numbers of players are out of contract.
They intend to lean on Moyes’s expertise and knowledge of the club for the revamp.
As reported by The i Paper last week, the intention is for Moyes to be the “anchor” in a summer of huge change at Everton.
“Everton complied with the PSR limits but that was on the back of a couple of player sales,” football finance expert Kieran Maguire says.
“Can they buy in January? Yes. Can they make marquee signings? No.
“I think the key phrase here is a player trading model. Trading involves both the exit door and the entry door and while fans will focus more on the incomings and players they don’t want to leave there are deals to be done, swaps to be arranged and there are opportunities to strengthen the squad.
“There’s scope to do stuff. Everton have a few million pounds to deal with [from a PSR perspective] – they got some players off the pay roll at the end of 2023-24 which will have helped this year, they were modest in their recruitment, had a couple of player sales that have gone through that had a positive impact.
“They are in a better position than 12 months ago in terms of overall finances and that can be reflected in modest movements as far as January window is concerned.”
