I am no fan of chess grandmaster (self-taught) Anthony Gordon but at least he can stretch the field and get behind the opposition defence. Cole Plamer was sensational last season but is being overlooked for a mediocre right-back who is playing out of position.

Might also be the time to keep Kane on the bench - he does not look fit and Watkins had more threat and movement in his time on the pitch.

As mentioned in the above posts pick players in their best position.

Obvs the left back situation is a mental one for England. Defo feels like he missed a trick by not taking Mitchell from Palace. Think the biggest positional problem is defensive centre mid though.

Mental comments about Kalvin Phillips. I mean fair enough he was a big part of that last euros team and there was a good balance with him and Rice as the partnership - obviously his form has fallen off a cliff. But his last cap was 2 years ago did I read?!

Why hasn’t he turned to the actual players who can play deep in the midfield first?in the squad I guess he’s got Mainoo and Wharton for that?feel like either of those in there and we would instantly have a better shape as they know how to play that position. I’d be confident that the attacking players can find the quality between them but first and foremost they need a solid defence and central midfield behind them

He knew Phillips wasn’t gonna be there. After that impressive England debut from Mainoo I really don’t understand why he didn’t go all in on pairing him and Rice, with Bellingham further forward

Then between Foden, Saka, Gordon, Palmer, Bowen and Eze you’ve got enough quality to make something happen

100% the DM is the biggest problem. It's maybe the most important position in modern football, and it's how you get the ball from defence into midfield. You hear coaches talk about having a 2-3 shape in build up, or a 3-2 shape and that's all about your method of getting the ball from the keeper and the centre backs into midfield on a consistent basis. England just don't have that with Rice/TAA.

Rice isn't someone who can take the ball on the half turn and start the play. He is the box to box merchant with the ball, and the breaker up of play without the ball. And TAA is fine with the pitch in front of him, and time to play, but he cannot receive the ball with back to play under pressure. You need a sitting passer next to Rice if you're playing a double pivot. Having someone there like Wharton or Mainoo would completely transform the entire team in an instant, because you'd be regularly getting the ball to our best offensive players into feet.

In the first game Serbia played low block for 30 mins, and there was no pressure on Rice/TAA so it wasn't an issue, and then they changed their tactics and went high press and we never kept the ball comfortably in midfield again in the the whole game. Denmark clearly realised that and pressed them two from the start, and we never got comfortable possession in the entire game.

And to compound the problem in both games, Southgate hasn't realised this at all and done the opposite of what we needed by bringing a combative midfielder on in that position instead of Wharton/Mainoo. I find that quite alarming that he doesn't realise that and it's why he's a good few levels below the top club managers. Gallagher is a good player, but a controlling DM is not his role whatsoever.
