Always been a confidence player.
When hes smiling and firing on all cylinders, he can be a very good player.

But his form is like a rollercoaster.

Always continuing to play him out of position is now just infuriating

You could see the lads been struggling for a long time now….i mentioned it last June in a post about the turmoil he was in…I’m just surprised no one at the club picked up on it earlier…big thing is….as a professional footballer it only gets highlighted through his performances on the pitch….as that’s where he is spotlighted by the fans as obviously we are not as close to him as the inner sanctum within the club…..

Some of the people slagging mcneil off are also saying they love patterson. Don't think its much of an argument which contributed more. Gomes was apparently ruined by injury despite being shite before it too.

I think signing supposed wonder kids who dont work out or a crap flair player from Barcelona is more palatable than signing bottom end of the league plodders even if them plodders produce more

Buying a mcneil never sat right with everton fans because it shows how far we've slipped

Yep. Slagged off McNeil and love Patterson. But there’s more to it than just young vs old or gift vs graft. It’s also about hope. Having seen and appreciated/loved McNeil’s highs and seeing how he’s playing now. He does not give me hope for better football in the future. Having seen glimpses of technique and the green shoots of improvement from Patterson, he gives me hope that perseverance could lead to something better.

So fuck being from Burnley or being called Dwight or anything else folk might think this is based on. It’s all about hope for a better future for the team and the club and the football we play.

Absolutely think it is that but I also think its a bit delusional too. Mcneil has never been remotely popular with our fans because even when he was good (relatively) and helping keep us up we knew that was it. With patterson or a gomes there's a blind hope even though ultimately they will prove to be even shitter. We dont like a plodder because we desperately need that hope.

As a result of wanting to invalidate the opinions of others IMO. It seems like none of us are capable of assessing football players properly and can only do it based on our own biases based on player backgrounds.

That's why I asked about the Burnley thing, as it stuck in my head a while back as a bizarre claim.

I get your point, but pinning any hope on patterson because for the first time he's shown he's not absolutely shite, makes way less sense than giving dwight some leeway given that he has actually shown he can contribute in the past but is now struggling to play at the same level when being played out of position (and potentially due to other challenging circumstances).

Patterson has done nothing to deserve the patience some have shown him, without dwight we'd probably be in the championship. I'm not arguing to keep him, we need to move past footballers as limited as he is, but that comparison is a weird one to me.

But from my own perspective I used to really like him. He was my profile pic until fairly recently. Thought he was incredibly hard working, offered his fullback protection and could score goals no one else in the squad could.

But now I just want rid. I hope he has a long, happy healthy life and at no point in it, does he wear an Everton shirt again.

Lovely fella. But just can’t play for us any more.
