Hull accepted a bid for the player and Villa had a clause in their former players contract to be able to match any bid. They’ve matched the £16m bid from Ipswich. If, say, we went in with an £18m bid, Villa would have another 3 days to match it. Etc etc.

Essentially just a bidding war. Depends what clubs are willing to pay but £16m was always too cheap. He’ll go for north of £20m. Interested to see if Villa genuinely want him or just thought they could flip him if they got him for £16m.

Well no but they could buy him and sell him on themselves, would do their FFP some good.

Surely any club has the right to match any bid, anywhere. The final decision would still be up to the player.

Doubtful. Seems Villa’s clause would restrict him from going to another clause if they match the price. Otherwise this clause would be meaningless and they would never include it in contracts.

Villa and loaned out to Hull again at Xmas.

Although it won’t actually cost Villa 18m to ‘match’ the other bids because they have a 30% sell-on clause

You can't enforce such a clause. It's up to the player if all bids are equal.
