Has a player ever seen out their contract and left with a good relationship with the fans?
It’s a perfectly normal part of the game for fans to be annoyed at this.
It’s also perfectly normal that he wants to leave the club he’s been at for 10 years to look for a massive pay day as he’s on borrowed time.
We don’t have to take sides with everything.
With us I guess Yerry Mina?kind of managed to get his shit together just in time to play the last games of the season with us in a dire situation, playing out of his skin and scoring a last gasp equaliser at Wolves probably helped, as well as him advertising that Bournemouth game as the last dance

Yes that was the fractured cheek bone one.
When fans were shouting homophobic abuse at him with his da in the stands, can't have helped

Beto - think it’s not long till teams realise that if they sit deep so there’s no space behind for him to run into, this not only nullifies his threat, but stretches the rest of our team further up the pitch, making us easier to play through if they can move the ball quickly and well.
I feel regarding this, if teams are scared of Beto and drop 10 yards to combat it, surely thats a good thing and will allow the rest of our team to play.
I think he will be sound, he will fall out of this purple patch and revert to a 1 in 3 striker, but that is sound for where we are currently.

I think there's 2 different scenarios with players leaving on a free at the end of their contract:
1) Players that aren't really worth anything if sold, probably very injury prone, did their best for the club when available but aren't reliable or someone you can build a team around.
2) Important players who are worth a good chunk of cash and so the team are losing both an integral part of the team and also not being compensated financially.
DCL definitely fits in category 1 just like Mina did... We aren't really losing anything by them leaving on a free transfer, but both gave their best for the club. Should go with well wishes and little animosity.
Then you look at TAA who is an important first team player, worth probably £50-£80m even if he's shit at defending, walking away from his boyhood club for free... That's the type of leaving on a free that you could argue brings about some warranted animosity.

Think more of it comes down to if they've been offered a new contact and refused which DCL has whereas I don't think someone like Mina was.

It's a good point.
It's also, for me, absolutely fine for a player to be like no I don't want to stay here.
I suppose it's sort of on me to be like - the reaction will be what it will be, and that's probably universal for football clubs as per others points above I guess.

I think the toxicity towards him leaving will die down a lot with us most likely being safe.
If we were struggling and he wasnt in good form/injured while his contract was running down i imagine it would be a lot worse.
Also fans seem to be happy because Beto has come in and started scoring meaning less need for DCL.

Thanks for your perspective. I reckon I’m in the minority but I still don’t think it’s warranted.
You had an asset for a period of time and paid for it. During the period the contract belonged to you, you did not sell it and at the end of the contracted period, you did not extend the contract period. That’s it. Why should there be any animosity?
You say walking away from, but that’s a bit emotive. You could just as easily say he has fulfilled all contractual obligations. It means the same thing but it’s more positive.

You know what's actually great? For someone who plays off the shoulder he's offside about 1/10 of the times DCL is.

Probably a bit knackered after the last weeks, things didn't work out today but overall I think he was still pretty decent.

Missed THREE one on one chances, DCL would be getting absolutely rinsed on here if it'd been him.
Scored goals recently but tonight showed regardless of his recent form he's still not a player we can rely on long term.
I've about turned once again on him, maybe not for the last time.

If DCL has scored 5 goals in his last 4 then he wouldn't have been rinsed.
The last 2 were good saves from Flekken. First one was maybe just a bit too chaotic in the way it came about.

Maybe, just maybe you should stop oscillating between extremes and try to express nuanced, reasonable views

Objectively, some really good centre forward play tonight.
