Give it 18 months under Howe and this place would be the same as it is towards Moyes. Matchday thread at home to Palace in absolute meltdown after they come from 2-0 down to beat us 3-2 in stoppage time, the 9th time in the season we've conceded 3 or more goals in a game.

Like the Alastair Johnson rumours, I'd be massively disappointed and concerned if Eddie Howe is the best we can come up with.

Here's how it stacks up over the last five completed Premier League seasons (2021‑22 to 2025‑26):

David Moyes (West Ham 2021‑24, then Everton from Jan 2025)

Total: 274 conceded → ≈54.8 per season / ≈1.44 per game

Eddie Howe (Newcastle, throughout)

Total: 259 conceded → ≈51.8 per season / ≈1.36 per game

So Howe's Newcastle have conceded fewer goals on average over this period — driven heavily by that remarkable 2022‑23 season (33 conceded, joint-best in the league, finishing 4th). Take that one outlier season away and the two are actually very close (Howe ≈54 a season in the other four years, almost identical to Moyes).

A couple of caveats worth flagging:

Moyes wasn't in charge of Everton for the whole of 2024‑25 — Sean Dyche managed the first half of that season before Moyes took over in January 2025, so that 44-goal tally isn't purely his.
Howe also only took over Newcastle partway through 2021‑22 (November 2021), so that 62-goal figure includes a chunk of Steve Bruce's tenure too.

If you strip out the partial-season noise and just compare their full seasons in sole charge (Moyes: West Ham 21‑22 to 23‑24 + Everton 25‑26; Howe: Newcastle 22‑23 to 25‑26), the gap narrows further, but Howe still edges it thanks to that outstanding 2022‑23 defensive record.
And how much has Moyes spent compared to Howe?

Dont know, but there is additional context beyond spend too. Howe is generally has quite an attacking, possession based football and therefore probably a bit more open, Moyes is ultra defensive, sets up teams to do nothing other than defend and doesnt care about having the ball other than for the defenders or keeper to launch it 80 yards for wingers or strikers to run onto.

At least it would be entertaining Howe wouldn’t play a cb at right back or put up with myko never getting forward he would have us playing actual football not Pickford hoofing it up to the isolated big 9

Surely comparing his Bournemouth stats would be more comparable with the standard of player Moyes has at his disposal here

Large sections of the home crowd will be eager to get on Moyes' back if we start the season poorly.

He'll then come out with his excuses and confrontational press conferences and things will spiral from there.

New manager after Xmas.

Tell you what, the start of this thread escalated quickly! Wasn't 2 pages long before "condescending prick" was being thrown around.

Agreed. Their teams might concede similar amounts but Howe actually plays football and Moyes doesnt. I like football myself.

No to Howe.

He’s too fucking sloppy at setting a team up.

I have Frank well ahead of him.

I think I said Howe was Roberto with better fitness training and social competence. I don’t think he recklessly punts set pieces either.

That still leaves you lacking in the defensive organization department.

I’m not into hiring someone who has not been good in one particular area and has not worked it out over numerous years aside from one positive blip.

I've never been one of Moyes biggest fans or defenders but this is a bit of a myth. Moyes is cautious, always has been, always will be but with the right players he showed when he was here the first time that we can play some decent football. He just goes into too many games with a "don't lose" attitude but people go on like he's Dyche or Allardyce at times when he isn't.

If Howe is the answer you are not asking the right question.

This sums it up.

His best teams have been able to play with the ball quite effectively but he’s never been brave enough to back them to do it against a perceived superior opponent.

One big part of the Martinez jolt was simply emboldening us to play regardless of who we were up against. And it worked for a bit until fitness levels and defensive organization rotted out too much to sustain it.

However got Newcastle top 4, beat some big teams in the champions league. He's infinitely better than anything we've had in a loooooong time outside of Ancelotti.
